VICTORIAN FINANCES
AN ENGLISH OPINION,
(BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.—COPYRIGHT.) London, April 13. This Victorian loan is quoted at a premium of 1 per cent. The Economist asserts that Victoria is suffering from a financial crisis. It states the export of gold has diminished, and thi? management of the Treasury has been reckless and incapable, and would not be tolerated in a private firm. The dwindled surplus and the deficit in the railway revenue prove that the public works of the colony are unproductive, and advises investors to show above an ordinary amount of caution in dealing with the loan. It declares that, unless financial ability is introduced into the Victorian Treasury, political jobbery checked, and Parliament insists on deriving more from the land than loans, the colonial tax-payers and English investors will suffer.
