[BY ELECTRIC TELEGKAPH—COPYRiaHT.I Melbourne, April Bth. TwK Exhibition building was crowded last evening to hear a debate on Freetrade and Protection between Mr Henry George and Mr W. A. Trenwith, M.L.A. for Richmond. Owing to his being a stranger iu this country, Mr George was compelled to dwell on the general principle, and could not give local colouring to his arguments, while Mr .Trenwith persisted in dealing with local instances. At tlib- conclusion of the debate the opinion of the audience appeared to be very divided. Influenza is making rapid strides through the colony. Sydney, April 8. The township of BOurke, situated on the southern bank of the Darling River, 503 miles north-west of Sydney, is in a dangerous position owing to the heavy floods. It is now an island with miles of water round it. Kemp and McLean have signed articles for a match., O'Connor asserts he is being humbugged, and declares his intention of leaving by the next San Francisco steamer, claiming the undisputed championship. The difficulty appears to be that O'Connor wishes to row Stansbury for the championship, while the latter is willing to row for £500 a-side, but cannot row for what he does not hold. Hobart, April 8. The daughter of the Governor, Sir R. Hamilton, was married to-day to Mr Weighall, solictor, of Melbourne.
