WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the Waipa County Council was , held in the Council Chambers, Ohaupo, at 11.80 a.m., on Tuesday. There were present: Crs. Lang (chairman), Finch, Anderson, Teasdale and •Farrell. , ~.:.■.••■- ; ■ ~ , The county engineer, Mr A. Armstrong," was also in attendance. • The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and adopted. : ' • Rkpokt.— In bis monthly report the engineer stated that the contractor for the Ohote creek bridge had almost finished the' job at the end of last week, -and the work,. had been carried out to his entire satisfaction, the contractors for the Whatawhata ; road drain and Campbell's gully bridge had entered en their contracts, and he recommended ,that several small works throughout the county be done. The report was received, and the engineer instructed to have the work done as recommended in his report. MoNicoii's Bridge.— Cγ. Teasdale said that owing to the state of this bridge Mr Coatee had been unable to bring his threshing machine into the Ohaupo district. Cr. Anderson said that he had heard complaints about this bridge, and had gone and in-* spected it with Cr. Hunter, and that he found it was quite strong enough to carry any threshing machine plant in the district. He called attention, however, to the dangerous state of the approaches, and suggested that wings be put on the ends of the bridge, and that the cutting at the sides, be sloped so as to allow cattle to get to the water. The engineer also said that tha bridge was quite sate for some time. It was decided tt get the work done as' recommended by Cr. Anderson.
Kihikihi Road.—Cr Farrell called the attention of the Council to the state of the Te Awamutu-Kthikihi road near Dr. Pairman's gate, and he moved that a set of 12 inch, pipes be put in to carry of the water and the road gravelled. Seconded by Cr. Teasdale and carried. WHATAWHArARoad Drain.— Mr J. B. Whyte wrote stating that he was willing to contribute £10 towards this work, but he thought it hard on him that he should be the only one asked to contribute, whereas others would be more directly benefited by the work, and he suggested that the Council endeavour to get the wther settlers to
contribute. The engineer said that he understood from Cr. Ridler that one settler, who was not able to contribute any money, had agreed to deepen from 25 to "30 chains of the drain at the side of tho road leading into the main drain. •
Culveri'.—A letter was received from Mr Wills calling attention to a culvert required on the Alexandra road, opposite Mr Conn's place, as at present the water is backed some 15 chains into his paddocks. It was decided to hold this work over till next meeting, Cr. Fincli to see Mr Conn in the meantime.
Fund.—The clerk reported that at the Slst March the overdraft stood at £398 19s Id, but the accounts passed to-day would raise the amounts by over £200. Ngaruawhaia Punt. —Tho Ngaruawahia Town Board wrote stating that some miscreant had cut the punt across the Waipa river adrift and taking it about four miles down the river had there scuttled it. They asked the Council to contribute a proportion of a reward of £10, offered to obtain a conviction of the offender. It was decided to accede to the request. Control of Bridges.—Notification was received from the Survey Department with reference to the control of the several bridgesand ferries in the county, as follows • —The Te Rore and Whatawhata bridges were placed under the control of the Raglan County Council, that county to contribute 06 per cent, of the cost of maintenance, and the Waipa County Council 34 per cent. ; the Ngaruawahia ferry was placed under .the control of the Ngaruawahia Town Board, the cost of maintenance being apportioned as follows: Raglan County Council, 50 per cent.; Waipa County Council, 25 per cent.; Ngaruawahia Town Board, 25 per cent, Tenders.—The Engineer was instructed to call for tenders for forming about twenty chains of the Tukerimu road, between Mr J. and Mr R. Fisher's gates; and Cr. Anderson, m conjunction with the Engineer, was authorised to open the tenders on the 19th inst., and deal with them. Holes.—The Chairman said that there were several nasty holes on the Tuhikara-mea-Whatawhata road, near Mr Day's old place, and the Engineer was instructed to have them filled in. Furze.—Several councillors having called attention to the way in which furze was encroaching on the roads in various parts of the county, the Clerk was instructed to send notices to clear the furze to Messrs Clav- , forth W. Stewart G. Rigg, A. White, and the Trustees of the Presbyterian Manse Te Awamutn, and stating that if it were not done the Council would do the work at the owners' expense. Dog Registrar.-No settlement having been arrived at with the Dog Registrar for last year, the Clerk was instructed to write to him at once, asking, him to return all the unsold collars. Ratks.—lt was decided to advertise that immediate proceedings will be taken against all persons whose rates are unpaid after next meeting. PAYMENTS.-The following accounts were passed for payment :-Messrs Fawkes and 1 oxall, £4 Uβ 9d ; R. Newish, £2 17s ; A. ■Turnwald, 15s ; C. T. Rickitt, 10s ; Engineer £11 12s 10d; A. Nicol, £193 17s 7d : Clerk £B ming ' 2S '' PMy Cash, £3: This was all the business.
