REQUEST TO REMOVE RESTRICTIONS. jOnly matters* of general importance were dealt with at the meeting lust night. A ! request wae made to remove the restrictions from the whole,of the King" Country/-an area of six million acres—so that? the natives might deal with it as they pleased. A*, present the Government; only have ' power ■ to deal for ariy of these lands. Mr Mitchelson said the Government could not:think of granting the request, and refused to entertain the .proposal/ i.Wahanui, who. followed,, eaid Mr Mitchelson was quite right in refusing and that the desire to remove the restrictions from the country was not general. The village was very lively, last night....... The meeting held in the Public frail Was very important in one respect, a number of years ago it was the Government who unred the Maoris to allow rnadß.to be made, and work to be done in the King Country, and at that time men would be shot for attempting such work, last night on the contrary, it was the Maoris who pleaded with Mr Mitchelson to make roads, bridges, rivers and construct railway cittle sidings.
