Otorohanga Races.

Ouu races here on Saturday, were a grand success, for the new course at Orihiri. The weather, doubtless from its threatening appearance, kept a good many at home, but with the exception of a shower or so in the afternoon, which did no harm, the weather was all that could be desired and the sport first rate. On Mr Win. Saarancke, as usual, fell the great part of the work, a.s secretary, and as a matter of course it was no trouble to him. To the handicapper, Mr Bond, the close finishes in every rfice was undoubtedly a source of gratification, or shou'd have been was the public opinion. Mr G. T. Wilkinson as judge, gave every satisfaction. No protests word the order of the day.

Thk Handicap Hurdle Rack, of t'S, distance two miles, over 8 flights uf liurd!e3, three 'feet six inches high.— brought forward ii field of five horses. Muscatcllo being at once installed as favourite lit even betting, with Doctor next -.it 2 to 1; four entries. The race was in Muscatelle's hands but for tho big swag to make up weight, which was not properly secure, and took all tho jockey's attention to carry round. The race resulted with Mr A. Clarke s Doctor Ist; Henwoods Muscatelle (owner) 2nd.

Maidbn Plate, of .£(>; Distance H miles, weight for age.—For this race there were eight entries, which, after a close finish, was won by Mr Hare Haera's Kiriruru, Mr Ngaki's Skylark 2nd.

For the Oxstow Cut , , Handicap, of £10, distance two miles, Mn.scatelle and Bret Harte were scratched, leaving Mataina, Lonely and Tβ Natno to settle the supremacy. Won by Mr Searancke's Lonely, Mr Paratine's Mataina 2nd. Won hard held.

For the Pony Raok, of £4, distance one mile. Nine ponies started, and the event was won by Kapene. Witi would havo won this, but for running outside a post in the straight. Witi started a strong favourite.

For the Skttlbrs' Race of £8, distance \h. miles, weight lOst, there were five entries. Lonely again did the trick, winning easily, with Kistnet second. Stingaree led the first time round, and seemed to all appearances the winner, till Lonely's rider (H. Weal) sat down, and in a very short time Stingaree collapsed, Lonely winning easily. Bret Uarte and Dynamite also ran.

For the TuoTTiNO Rack, distance 2 miles, prize £2, there were four entries. Mr Robinson's Gentle Annie (scr.), 1; Taipo (150 yds.), 2; Tβ Witi (200 yds.), 3. Queenie (250 yds.), also started. Gentle Annie, without a break, won.

For the Native Rack of £3, distance 1 mile, there were eight entries. Won by Broughton's Kismet, Noka's Clipperina second.

The Consolation Stakes, ran in tho dark, was won by Dynamite, Te Witi second.

This concluded a capita} day's sport. In the evening an entertainment was held under the auspices of the Otorohanga race committee in the Public Hall, the room being packed to the door, some 300 being present. Mr H. H. Reynolds presided, and had no difficulty in that capacity in maintaining order, not a single specimen of the genus larrikin being present. In Captain Morton and family the Otorohanga people, Europeans and native, can congratulate themselves in having obtained all that can possibly be desired to raise their offspring to the highest state of cultivation. Captain Morton having been appointed as master of. the now school. Mrs Morton and daughter are accomplished musicians, while Master Morton's performance—club exercise—to musical accompaniment, was a treat to witness. Mr C. Johnstone, the original McCabe, was as successful as ever in amusing the large andionca present. Mr and Mrs Morton, and Miss Rew» Morgan kindly played all the accompaniments. The following was the full programme. At the conclusion of the concert dancing was enjoyed until 12 p.m. Throughout the whole day's and evening's enjoyments Constable Berrymiin's duty was a sinecurekudos for tho King Country.
