FATAL ACCIDENT IN THE AUCKLAND HARBOUR.
A bad drowning accident occurred in the Auckland harbour on Sunday afternoon. A small sailing boat containing a young man named Hutley and two young girls was capsized in mid-stream noar to the ship Persian Empire. Two of the seamen on board at once divested themselves of their clothes, and gallantly jumped overboard to the rescue, and were shortly followed by Mr Talbot the third officer. The ferry steamer Britannia which was coming from' the North Shore was headed for the scene of the accident and rescued all the party with the exception of Mr Talbot who was some little distance apart from the other five. As the steamer oame up he was seen to be swimming away from her endeavouring to stem the strong tide that was drifting him towards the paddle wheel. In this he unfortunately failed, and he was sucked under the vessel, it is supposed, he must have been struck by the paddle wheel, as he was only seen for a moment afterwards, and then only his feet came to the surface. Mr Talbot was only in his 22nd year, a native of Cainbridge, England, and his only relatives are two aunts, who reside in England.
