A prisoner named Thomas Johnson, awaitiug his trial for forgery at Marton, escaped from the gaol this morning at 9'20 a.m. He had been working in the carpenters' shop with a fellow prisoner, but was left by himself a few minntes, locked in by the gaoler. Other prisoners working in the gaol saw Johnson making his escape, and after some delay gave the word to the gaoler, who at oucc rushed out, but Johnsou had a good start and was soon lost sight of. The police are on bis track. NAPIER, Last Night. Johu Walter, a tailor, age 55 years, was found dead in bed this morning with au empty packet of Rongh-on-Rats in his pocket. Deceased had been drinking of late. DUNEDIN, Last Night. Jonathan Roberts has been capturcdon the Sydney side. Though the authorities have received no advice of Jonathan Lloberts'arrest, they have been awarefor some time of his presence in New South Wales, and measures were taken to sccure his arrest.
