THE PUHIPUHI SILVER LODES.
(by telegraph.—own correspondent ) Auckland Last Night. A TELEGRAM from Whangarei states that the determination of the Government to throw the Puhipuhi field open under the Minin? Act, has caused great surprise, as it was understood that special regulations were to be framed, with the view of grant iug leases. A quarter share in the prospector's claim has been sold at £150, and £450 has been offered and refused for a half share. Quite twenty companies have been formed and had prospectors in the forest, and many have discovered good reefs. The change was intended to secure under thirty acre leases, but the fact of the forest being opened under the Mining Act will give every holder of a miner's right power to peg off one man's ground, and thus split the land up into uselessly small areas. The feeling against the Government is more bitter than ever Shares in the Tainatawhinau Syndicate, who hold 1200 acres of freehold on the boundary of Puhipuhi are quoted at the same value as the propectors' shares. A company i:being formed in Melbourne with a capitil of £100,000 t'» operate on this block. Ten thousand shares will be taken up locally. Another silver lone has found in the nrospectors' working as rich as No 3 reef. This lode is at the apposite end of the claim.
