FEDERATION.
(liV KLKCTRIC TISUMHAPH.—COPYIUGHT.) London-, January 31. Sir 0. G. Duffy, in an article in the Contemporary Review, urges the Government and Opposition to induce Parliament to declare the federation of Australia of high importance to the interests of die Empire, and invite the colonial Legislative Chambers to federate. If the Queen appointed the Earls of Roseberjr and Carnarvon to carry such a resolution to Australia, and confer with the delegates from colonial Legislatures, federation would at once be achieved.
Sir C. Dilke, in his recently published book, ihinks Sir H. Parkes will find a difficulty in persuading the colonies to federate unless he adopts protection. It is probable Australia will ultimately become a dominion with which New Zealand will be loosely connected. Sir Charles Dilke concurs with the action of Queensland in demanding a voice in the appointment of a Governor. Melbourne, January 31. The Australasian says New Zealanders quickly found out the weakness underlying Mr Deakin's passionate phrases, are.now troubled at the astonishing difference between his words and his acts. New Zealand cooperates with ua in naval defence. She can co-operate with us in other matters, but she has little reason to submit to a Federal Government unless all the markets of Australia are freely thrown open to her products and manufactures.
