The St. James' Gazette denounces the Irish land purchase proposals. Sir W. Robinson has been interviewed by the Pall Mall Gazette. He said was the real capital of Australasia. It was likely the approaching conference would produce federation for the purposes of defence, but he was not sanguine that political federation would be speedily brought about. There was a full attendance and good bidding. Good Australian merino and erossbreds are unchanged and firm. Inferior sorts are five per cent, lower. The second series will begin after Easter. January 30. Sailing vessels' freights have been reduced by half-a-crown. Paris, January 29. France is disposed to agree to the Egyptian conversion scheme if Army and Police Reserve Funds are created.
The committee deputed to examine the French Tariff in connection with the renewal of the commercial treaties in 1892 is composed of 39 Protectionists, 13 Free Traders, and 3 of uncertain views. M. Leon says he urged the committee not to impose a duty on wool. In his opinion it would be better by throwing open the ports to try to make Roubaix the central wool market of the world.
France has refused to join Russia in a protest against the Italian protectorate in Abyssinia. Cairo, January 29. Emin Bey is improving, and has now left the hospital. Rio us Janiero, January 29. It is reported that General Fonseca's tyranny, and the arrogance of the military, are causing serious discontent. The majority of the uavy are opposed to Fonseca, though republican in sentiment. Washington, January 30. President Harrison has cordially recognised the Brazilian Republic. Massowa, January 29. Ttaly is pacifying Adower on behalf of King Menelek, of Abyssinia, but repudiates any idea of occupation. Ottawa, January 30. The Dominion Parliament has unanimously voted an address to the Queen, declaring it an insult to doubt the loyalty of Canada, or represent her as desirous of separating from the Empire. Lisbon, January 30. Captain Costillo has resumed the Governorship of Mozambique.
