BEAR SHOOTING ADVENTURE.
A. thrilling bear-shooting adventnre oconrred a few driyu ago nt Wallendorf, in Hungary. The following is tVe account given by Advocato For«ter, who, as will be seen narrowly escaped with his life :—" I wont with a party of friends to tho neighbouring mountains to shoot roedeer. There were plenty of them, only the dogs hounded them away to the valley beyond. I consequently changed my place, and took my stand at a spot which I knew to be favourably. Presently I heard the dogs coming, but fancied, from their bark, that they were chasing a boar. I quickly withdrew my shot cartridges and put in bullets, but what was my surprise to seo a huge bear trotting quietly towards me, apparently regardless of the dogs. When within seventy paces I fired, and saw him fall, but, nevertheless, I thought it prudent to give him a second shot, which likewise took effect. I afterwards proceeded to a hillock close by, and called my companions, but hardly had [ raised my voice ero the bear got up and made straight for mo. I had just time to reload and fire when he was within five paces of me. It did not quite finish him off, for he fell upon me with a terrible howl, and knocked me heavily to tho ground. I managed to push the barrels of my gun into his open jawe, and fired a second ahot. Luokily, also, two dogs came up and seized him from behind. In a last effort, he oaugbt my foot between his teeth, and had enough strength left to bite through my high boots and slightly wound my ankle. When my friends came up they were greatly alarmed to see mo oovered with blood, but fortunately it was that of my shaggy victim, not my own."
