AN EXCITING WHALE HUNT.

On the arrival at Kirkwall of the packet Klydon from Shapinsay information was received of a large shoal of wales disporting in String Sound, Boats at once went out from Kirkwall, and when coming off Shapnsay the monsters were discovered with a few boats in chase. Efforts were then made to get them into Inganess Bay, the boats tacking backwards and forwards and the whales spouting water in every direction and making right for the sand. About 300 yards from the shore one of the mammals came up, smashing one of the boats, and throwing the three occupauts into the water. They were speedily rescued by another boat, their own boat sinking. The whales ran aground in the shallow water, the boats pulling after them and the men jumping in their eagerness into the water, some armed with lances, but their principal weapons were long fish knives, with which in a very few minutes they were doing deadly execution. The whales spouted great showers of blood and made a moaning noise, some of them, which were only wounded, rushing through the bay, driving up the sand, and blinding themselves in their frantic efforts to escape. The sea for some distance was red with blood. Ropes were got, and, by the help of many people who had congregated on the beach, the whales were hauled up abo« - e high-water mark. Darkness came on before the slaughter was finished. Nearly 200 whales were captured.
