CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The adjourned monthly meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council was held at 7 p.m., on Friday, Present: The Mayor, (Mr Clements), Councillors, Hally, Webber, Youn<», Ferguson, and D. Richardson. Annual Meeting.—The returning officer, (Mr J. P. Thomson), announced that Cr. j. H. Priestly, had been electod Mayor for the ensuing year; and that the statutory meeting for his installation would be held at noon on Wednesday the lGth. inst. Ihe minutes of the previous meeting wore then read and duly confirmed. Thk Hospital.—The Secretary to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, wrote stating that the Board had protested against fourteen members being appointed ; also that a reply had been received saying that the number was in accordance with the Act. • r _ The Railway Lhauue.—Mr 1. J. Von Stunner, Secretary to the above mentioned League, wrote asking the Mayor to call a public meeting to discuss railway matters, he also forwarded a paper on the subject, by Mr T. H. White, that he wished read at the meeting, which would provoke discussion. It was resolved to leave the matter to be dealt with by the new Mayor. It will probably be discussed at the annual meeting on Wednesday. The Karapiro Bridge Loan.—ln answer to several communications sent to the Sinking Fund Commissioners, asking if the Karapiro Bridge Loan had been legally struck ; and also in reply to a negative opinion of Messrs Hcsketh and Richmond, a copy of which had been forwarded to the Commissioners; a reply was received from the .Audit OfficQ stating fcluit thfi Commissioners had not met since any of the communications had been received, but that the matter would come before them at an early date. A lengthy communication was enclosed, combating many of the points raised by Messrs Hesketh and Richmond. The letter was received, and will bo discussed when, the reply of the Commissioners arrives. The School Concert.—lhe action of the Mayor in granting the School Committee the use of the Public Hall at actual cost, viz., 13a (id, 011 Thursday last, was approved of. The Waikato loreshoke.—Mr W. L. Souter wrote, asking permission to erect a gate and fence near the booms. He pointed out that the Timber Company paid a fair rent for the foreshore.—Cr. Hally said they could not give permission to anyone to obstruct the road, but they could wink at it. —It was pointed out that several sections of land faced the road beyond the booms, and that if Mr Sonter put a lock upon the gate, he must take the responsibility.—-It was resolved not to object to the gate being erected in the meantime. The Hall Piano.-Mr T. Hartly wrote, asking if the Council would grant the use of tho Public Hall, free of cost, if entertainments were got up for tho purpose of raising funds to purchase a new piano for the hall. He further stated that tho iustiumenfc at present in the building was in a very bad state, and would soon be useless. —It was resolved to grant the use of the hall, free of cost, for tho purpose named. Finance Report.—Overdraft, November 12th, toll 2s 3d; paid during month, ( £9 Us 7d ; lodged during month, £32 18s 3d ; accounts to pass, £'J 0< Hd ; overdraft when accounts are paid, £520 19s 3d. Legal limit of overdraft £557 9s lOd. Tenders.—Tenders having been called for the lease of alotment No. 411, for a term of 17 years, only one was received, viz., 10s per annum by Mr A. E. Hill. —The tender was accepted. Works Committer Repqrt.—llns merely stated that the surfaceman had been engaged nine days during the month. —It was adopted. Furze.—Crs. J. R. S. Richardson and Bond reported they had not had time to inspect tho whole of the streets, but would endeavour to have their report ready for the annual meeting on Wednesday. Dor; Collars.—lt was resolved to call for tenders for the office of dog registrar for the ensuing year, and also for the supply of dog collars. Vacancies.-Tho Returning Officer was instructed to take the necessary steps to fill the vacancy caused by Cr. Priestly having been elected Mayor. — Cr. D. Richardson wilt tender his resignation at the Wednesday meeting. Bank Interest.—Cr. Hally said tho bank was again charging them 9 per cent. 011 the overdraft. It seemed the arrangement to charge S per cent, only held good for six months. He thought a committee should be appointed to interview Mr Brooks.—The Mayor-elect and Crs. Hally and Webber were Appointed. ACCOUNTS.—The following accounts were passed for payinsnt, and the Council rose : —H. Preece, £2 os; F. J. Sanders, £3; W. S. Kvans, 7s (jd ; W. Soutp.r, t'3 Ss 2d.
