THE WAOTU FIRE.
♦ Wii have received the subjoined letter calling' upon sympathisers with the suffcrois by the recent conflagration p.t Waotu fur assistance, (in behalt of the native settlers. The fire has totally destroyed the native cultivations upon which they depend fur food .supplies for the year. It is well known that Mio Maoris have fallen into the unfortunate habit of planting on a limited scale barely sufficient for their own consumption, and if it happens that calls are made on their hospitality by visits from other tribes, thoy find themselves deficient in actual necessaries. One can, therefore understand what their position will be if they cannot replace their lost crops, and in all probability the ratepayers will have them thrown on their support through the Charitable Aid Board. There is yet time to plant late crops of potatoes and maize, and assistance in the shape of contributions of seed might well be forwarded to them for distribution. Seed potatoes are scarce, if not unobtainable, but we believe that there are quantities of old potatoes for which there is no sale and they could be utilised for seed. We commenced the case to the kind-hearted, and no doubt Mr Browne, of Lichfield, will receive contributions " Lichfield, December Oth 188 H. The Editor, Waikato Times, Hamilton. Dear Sir, —As you are aware, a destructive fire has occurred at Waotu. The natives have lost all their potato crops, and haven't the wherewithal to buy seed. Will you loud your influence to get a, few pounds together to repair the disaster. There's just time, if it is promptly dono. I will do what I can up here. In haste. Yours truly. .T. S. Browne, Manager, W. T. Co., (Ltd.)"
