TAUWHARE.
KnTKKTATXMHNT AN'II I)ANCK. —It i:< proverbial that the inhabitants of Tauwhare do not "spoil the ship for a half-pe-.niy worth of tar " when they undertake to provide an evening's entertainment, and they certainly will not lose any of their good repute by the one Riven on Friday last, for it consisted of a concert, dramatic entertainment, and dance, with provisions ad lib. The performance was given in the school-room, which for the nonce, had been converted into a very nice little theatre, and it reflects the greatest credit on Mr Moore and his able and willing helpers who assisted in its erection. Indeed, it is seldom that we find a nicer little stage in small towns, and certainly did not expect to find Tauwhare coming to the fore in that manner, lhe t'Uito ensemble was extremely good, and proves that Mr Moore is an old hand at the business, or he would not have arranged things so well. The concert was something meagre »8 to quantity, which was a good fault, as the performance was very late iu be<<iun ; .ng. Tlio following was the programme:—Piano duet, Messrsi McDermott and Martly ; song, " The Yellow Cirl that Winked at Me ;" Mr H. Wilson ; recitation, "Tragedy at Sloauea," Mr Drinkwater ; piano] and violin duet, " Myosotis Waltz, ' Messrs Howie and Prnbine ; song, " Within a Mile of Kdiuboro , Town," Mr Howie: song, "I'll Take Thee Home, Mr Waring ; comic trio, " Botany Hay," Messrs J)rinkwater, Moore and Howie: piano and violin duet, " My Queen Waltz," Messrs Howie and Probine; comic song, "The Paw Opener," Mr Waring. This was encored, and he substituted " Xi> Fear." The comic trio from " Little Jack Shepherd," entitled "Botany Bay," was redetnamled, and had to be repeated, the audience joining in with the woids, "also," "likewise," and "not forgetting," which are spoken daring the chorus. Mr Waring'.s song, "I'll Take Thee Home Kathleen," was far and away the best of the evening. His voice has improved since we last) heard him, and with a little instruction, it would prove one of the best in the district. It seems a pity that such a voice ihould be thrown away on comic songs, although we must admit that they are' the more popular. The concert was followed by a farce entitled "Awfully Fat," in which the dramatis person;': were as follows :--Mr Henry Squills (chemist), Mr Ihinkwater; .Mrs -Squills, Miss 1,. Waiwoitli ; Kuorge (Mrs Squills' cousin), Mr .Moore; Dr. Delightful, Mr Webb; Mr Slide (a dancing master), Mr Horvie ; Margery (servant), Miss T. Walworth ; Tom (page boy) Master T. Walworth. The fun of the piece is caused by the frantic endeavours of Mr Squills to get thin, or rather to keep from getting too fat, for the doctor tells him that if he onces reaches thirteen stone, there will be no stopping him, and he will become a species of adipose pumpkin. He weighs himself and finds he is just, one pound short ot that amount, and immediately takes steps to reduce himself, but in spite of all he can do, ho continues to get heavier because he pockets a quantity of silver coin that his tenants bring for .vnt. Cousin (leorge meanwhile makes love to Mrs art at which he seemed an adept. The whole, of the characters were well sustained, the best to our thinking being Miss I. Walworth, Mr Moore, and Mr Driukwater. The whole of the stage ell'eulx were then dismantled and the seats removed, after which dancing commenced and was kept up with spirit until three a.m. The room was quite crowded, a largo number having journeyed from Oambridge. Wo wish the Tauwhare Dramatic Club every success ; they 'have a manager who is no moan exponent of histrionic art and with tho material ho has at hand we shall expect to hear of still further success.
