Wastk ofTjmhkk,—The newly-appointed Forest Ranger, Mr Thos. E. Shaw, is not letting the grass grow under his feet. He has visited and minutely inspected the state of affairs in the various kauri forests and finds them far from satisfactory. At Waitekauri, it appears, there has been a sinful and wanton Waste of many valuable trees, many having been hewn, a few planks or pieces of a required size taken, and the balance of the trees left to rot. But by far the worst of tho matters thus brought to light is at Marototo or Hikutaia. It is, at present, inexpedient to say more upon the subject, as it is probable that law may be evoked. Suffice it that thero are thousands of pounds of revenue in question, and that the county intend striking at the root.
Mining Nkws. — Mining matters are quiescent. Most of the tributes are lying back for a Christmas crushing, while the companies mines are much as usual Humour hath it that the Crown is shaping well, aud that the Adeline Amalgamated are running two wholo men after a twelve month's spell. The Cassell Gold Extracting Company are working their plant successfully, and matters generally in this respect are fair to medium. After the new year there will probably be a turn for the better, Thero may not be so much cry, but there will, in all likelihood, be more wool.
