COUNTY ENGINEERS.

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —In your issues of September 17th and October 15th, ISS9, are reports of the proceedings of the Piako County Council at their periodical meetings. Statements and insinuations were made at both meetings by councillors which ought to have been challenged, or, at least, enquiry entered into as to the justification and merits thereof. I refer to the paragraphs headed " .Engineer*," in which charges are made which ought to have been formulated, this is due to the council, the ratepayers, and the parties referred tc, if works "engineering jobs " have existed they appear to have beon connived at, or the knowledge of their existence should have called for immediate investigation certainly, in justice to the ratepayers. Engineers to work successfully for their clients, must be above suspicion, else all their efforts professional and otherwise are futile. In common fairplay, I consider that at the next meeting of the Conueil the chairman should be asked to request the members who raised the question to specify and enumerate the instance which they refer to in which one says, " They had been suffering from contracts that had not been properly carried out for years," surely " years '" is a long time aud it must be allowed that the above remark should not have been allowed to pass without call for explanation ind opportunity allowed for the " Engineers " to refute the charges. What excuse can these councillors offer for allowing such a stnteof things to continue for years.—l am etc. Ratepayer.
