TE AROHA.

Vai.kdictoby.—Some ot the friends and well-wishers of Mr Charles Gallagher, on the occasion of his leaving the district, met on Tuesday evening at tho Hot Springs Hotel, for the purpose of giving that gentleman a farewell testimony of their esteem towards him. Amongst those present were Messrs (i. Lipsey, C. Comes, Dowries, J)ibsell, Brennau, Lynch, Hart, Hetherington, Schmidt, Menzies, Guilding, A. Smith. A. Cornea, and others. As it was not definitely known till Tuesday that Mr Gallagher intended leaving on Wednesday, the arrangements were necessarily of a hurried character and the attendance was in consequence not so large as it would have been had it been better known. Apologies were received from several gentlemen who were unavoidably absent. Notwithstanding the short notice given to Mr Smith, of the Hot Springs Hotel, an excellent light repast was provided and dono due justice to, Mr Ciem. Conies officiated as chairman, and in proposing the health of the guest of the evenin?, alluded in complimentary terms to Mr Gallagher's past fiiforts in mining, both at the Thames and Te Aroha. All will regret to bid him adieu, but he sincerely hoped they were only wishing him goodbye for a time, and that he would return amongst them with renewed vigour. Leadville, (Colorado), of which Mr Gallagher was one of the early prospectors, was but a small place when he left it, now it has a population of 05,000. He did not infer from this that Te Aroha was to progress like that, but in the departure of Mr Gallagher, who had spent so much money in the mining industry in this district, it was a decided loss to the community, he, (the speaker), had every confidence in the future of this field and again expressed a hope that brighter times would mduce Mr Gallagher to revisit them. Mr Gallagher's liberality towards assisting schools and in many other ways, was eulogised, and Mr Cornes concluded an eloquent speech by asking those present to join him in wishing long life and happiness, to Mr Gallagher which was duly drunk with all honors. Messrs Lipsey, Brennan and Menzies followed in the same strain of regret, and Mr Gallagher in a few remarks replied in feeling terms, and thanked those present for their good wishes. During the evening the proceedings were varied with songs, and altogether a most enjoyable hour or two was passed on the occasion. Mr Gallagher loft by train on Wednesday morning for Auckland. Mokk DuPARTUTiKR.— It is understood that as Mr Howeil's term of engagement with the Te Aroha Silver and Gold Mining Company has come to an end, that gentleman, accompanied by Mr L'oguu. will leave hero on Friday morning, en route for Australia. HoMii Ruu:.—Tho Homo Rule Baronet who is to address a mooting here on Friday evening will no doubt be most courteously listened to, but unanimity on the subject is not to bo expected, as there are some eminent, but yet unfledged, politicians both in Waiorongouiai and in this quiet little place, who, were they in the Old Country, would unquestionably, on this subject alone, be entitled to Conservative seats in the House of Commons, whilst on tho other hand a few might probably bs accommodated in another placs for six months for the expression of their views on this burning question. Two committee meetings have been held, and arrangements made to give Sir T. G. Esmonde, M.P., a hearty welcome to Te Aroha.
