PLUCKING LIVE GEESE.

At tho Holland (Lincolnshire) Sessions, hel'l at Spaldingr, George Winkley, poulterer, was charged with cruelty to 48 live geese by plucking , them of feathers; and John Bailey, owner of the geese, was charged with procuring the commission of tho offence. The proceedings were taken by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. An inspector stated that after the geese were plucked their skin turned a purple colour and they suffered great pain. They were plucked very closely and walked about with their backs up, and shrank when touched. The practice was very prevalent in that part of Lincolnshire, and the society asked for the infliction of a nominal fine to put a stop to it. The defendans said it was the custom of tho district to pluck the feathers every six weeks, and if they were stopped from doing ho many people would discoutinue keeping geese, as much more money was realised by the sale of tho feathers than by tho geese. Tho bench imposed fines of ISa, the chairman expressing a hope that it would bo a warning to other people.
