[by electric telegraph—COPYßlGHT. I London, October 16. Tiie French army corps on the German frontier is to be doubled. Lord Brassey eulogised the conduct of the dockmen on strike. Anglo-colonial circles were surprised at the exaggerated reports of the strike cabled to the colonies. A surplus of £7000 remains in the strike accounts. A Russian gunboat, with all hands, has been lost off Batouni. Lord Hopetoun, Governor-elect of Victoria, at a farewell banquet in London, said that the Governors recently appointed, would take higher positions in England after their colonial experience. Seven thousand miners at Courriere, in France, have struck. Body-snatchers have desecrated the grave of Ralph Walclo Emerson, the great American thinker. They were, however, disturbed, and it was found that the remains had not been touched. A colliery explosion took place at Longton, Staffordshire, to-day, and GO persons were killed. Mr Gladstone is urging opposition to the Sugar Bounties Treaty.
