[by TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION]. Wellington, The Triennial Stock Conference holds its next meeting in Melbourne on November Ist. New Zealand will be represented by Mr Cowan, M.H.11. for llokonui, and Mr Paisley, Chief Inspector of Stock for Hawkes' Bay, Hearn has placed £50, as a first deposit for the raco with Stephenson, in the hands of the stakeholder, and has signed the articles. The Immigration Department have received numerous eligible nominations from all parts of the colony, but owing to the amount of money at their disposal being limited, the acceptances have to bo restiicted to the near relatives of separated families. Wheu it was announced an American Company were trying to get the exclusive right to land cables on Sandwich Islands, the New Zealand Government promptly intervened and the British Consul at Honolulu also moved in the matter. It was urged on the British Government that such a concession would effectively bar the laying of the Pacific cable from Vancouver. Nothing has yet been heard on the subject, but the authorities here are confident this truly American dodge has beon checked at the outset.
Twogood's flax mill, at Feathertou, whs burned down last evening. Nothing was insured, and the loss is rockoned £350. It is understood that the Grand Lodge nf Scotland.is now opposed to the movement for a Grand Lodge of New Zealand. From information forwarded from the colony, the officers have concluded that if the pni : ject is gone on with, it is more likely to lead to dissension, than to seal the union under one charter.
