The Immigration Department have received numerous eligible nominations from all parts of the colony, but owing to the amount of money at their disposal being limited, the acceptances have to bo restiicted to the near relatives of separated families. Wheu it was announced an American Company were trying to get the exclusive right to land cables on Sandwich Islands, the New Zealand Government promptly intervened and the British Consul at Honolulu also moved in the matter. It was urged on the British Government that such a concession would effectively bar the laying of the Pacific cable from Vancouver. Nothing has yet been heard on the subject, but the authorities here are confident this truly American dodge has beon checked at the outset.
