TE AROHA.

Town Board.—The monthly meeting of this Board took place on Monday evening. Present: Messrs Gallagher (chairman), Ebert, Mills and Heathcote. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Amongst the inward correspondence iaceived was a letter from T. and S. Morrin and Co. (Ld.), requesting to be informed what the last rates on the township were, which information the Clerk stated he had supplied.—A letter from the Audit department, accompanied with the Board's balance-sheet, certified, was also read, and in this connection it transpired that the Auditor had informed the Clerk (Mr Aliier) that Te Aroha showed fewer rate defaulters than most of the country townships he was called upon to visit. At tho same time he pointed out that the cost of the administration of the funds had been ridiculously high. An item of £21 for advertising had been spotted ; an expenditure which, the present members of the Board agreed, would never be repeated while they were so constituted. The following accounts wero passed for payment:—F. Pavitt, £4 4s; C. Campbell, £29 3s 4d ; R. Michael, £7 10s (id ; W. Hetheiington, £2 lO.s; F. OToole, Bs. Total, £43 15s 10d, leaving an available balance in the Board's hands of £19 19s sd. The balance due on outstanding rates was stated to be between £3 and £4. In connection with an item of 20s per day iu Mr Hetheriiißton's account for carting, it transpired that the Auditor had remarked the charge was greater than in most rural districts, where from 10s to l'i.s (id was all that was charged, and members agreed that it would bo better to get the work done by tender in the future. In accordance with the requirements of the Act the balance-sheet was ordered to appear for public inspection on a black board outside the office of the Board.—This concluded the business.
