The Hinemoa leaves for the Chatham Islands to-night, taking four or five members of the Permanent Force, who will act as extra police, and enforce the collection of the dog tax. TheJHarbour Board has had a valuation of their properties made, showing a total of £56,581, which is considerably under that of the City values. This does not include the wharves.
The Wellington Racing Club has decided to reduce its meetings to five days during the year, two in the spring and summer, and one in the winter. The Spring meeting will be held in the same week as the Agricultural Show.
At the R.M. Court, Edwin Bannister, late clerk in the Postal Department, was committed for trial on two further charges of having defrauded the Government, by means of money orders. The other chargea against the accused were dismissed. Efforts made to float the Huia, which grounded in the Manawatu River were unsuccessful. Captain Pendall, Marine Surveyor, has left for the scene, to superintend operations. Major Gudgeon, Commissioner of Police, proceeds to the Chatham Islands by the Hinemoa, this evening, with the permanent artillerymen.
