Si'Aim.iNc; Mis'txc: News.— The Te Aroha Silver and Gold Mning Company (Limited) at the end of last week dispensed with seventeen men working in their mines and ten at the battery works. This sweeping reduction is, to say the least of it, discouraging, and indicates either that the stuff' is not in the stone, or that the company has been worked at a loss. Those who have been paid off are mostly single men. Fukotson Svxdu.'atic—Operations under this syndicato appear to be slow and very few men are employed vet at the battery works.

It would Ira very edifying nud amusing to be able to give the different opinions which have bp.en expressed about the now famous osg. Persons have been to inspect it and looked piuns over it, Cousin Jacks, have gazed at it, as an uncanny thing but generally .speaking it is looked upon as a foul freak. Nothing however will shake the belief of both Mr and Mrs Porsman that it is a direct message from Heaven for them to repair to the Gordon, and, to the Gordon they will go. Pancy Dhkss Bam.. —A grand skating carnival, followed by a fancy dress ball, took place in the Public Hall hero on Wednesday last. Comparatively few appeared in fancy dresses, but those who did were greatly admired, Miss Williams, of the Club Hotel, Te Aroha, winning special attraction in a rich costume as a "Gipsy Countess." Dancing was kept up till an early hour nest morning, and the event proved one of the most successful and enjoyable which has ever taken place here.
