OHINEMURI,

Tk Ahoha Bonotmir.—Tito petition of certain residents of Te Aroha, signed by HO persons, for the formation of a borough in that district, has been most unfavourably received at Paeroa, in so far as it affects the Ohinemuri district. In a sublimely cool manner it is proposed to cut off from Ohinemuri nearly six square miles of country, including the Tui Creek mines, and a large area of known auriferous country between Te Aroha and Karangahake. On the Tui Creek a larcre amount of money has been expended by the Ohinemuri County Council, and now that there is some probability of a recuperation of some of thi", the people who have signed this petition desire that they few may avail themselves of all this money spent. I understand that the Ohinemuri County Council intend opposing this matter to the utmost, and it improbable that tho members for Coromandel and Thames will be requested to spoil the little game. The Komata Case. —Tho sensation of the week has been the judgment given by Judge Scannell in the Komata North No. 1 case before the Native Land Court, now sitting at Paeroa. The opposing hapns in this block, which comprises about 3, GOO acres, were the Ngatitaiuri represented by Rihitoto Mataia and others, and the Kiriwera, represented by Haora and others. The case lasted about a fortnight, and the evidence appeared in favour of Rihitoto. However, after a long deliberation on Monday, Judge Scannell read a judgment giving the entire block to Haora for the Kiriwera hapu. This was a great surprise to all concerned, both Europeans and nativos. Rihitoto immediately applied for a re-hear-ing, and withdrew ail her other cases also. On Wednesday last, owing to a statement made by several natives to the Chief Judge, an enquiry was held by Judge Scannell as to whether the Assessor sitting on the bench was not related to the Kiriwera hapu, the result being that the Assessor withdrew from the bench, and a new one will be sent from Auckland. Paeuoa Whakf.—The proposed wharf at tho Paeroa bridge, which has been long talked about, and to approach which a lot of dredging and snagging would have to be done, has fallen through, owing to the fact that the cost would be too great. The present two wharves are ample accommodation, and it is satisfactory to see the County Council wise for once.

Heavy Fuksh.—On Saturday lost a very heavy fresh came down the river, which rose rapidly, flooding the steamer stores. No damage is reported at present. Mining Nkws. — Mining matters are quiet. The Cassell Company will be ready with their plant in about three weeks. The Jubilee plant at Wnitekauri will be formally opened this week. Farmer and party (Smile of Fortune) cleaned up at Owharoa battery for 1240zs of gold on Thursday. The Australian Gold-mining Company's plant is in full swing at Waitekauri. At Waihi Dr. Schiedol is making fair progress with the Newberry-Yautin plant. Little actual mining is being done, as Mr J. H. Russell has four months' protection while erecting a stamper battery. A good deal of prospectine is being done, and thi3 coming summer should see groat advances made herein mining. At Karangahake, Shepherd and party (Kenilworth) have eight tons of oro to grass, which is worth £'200 per ton ; and about 25 men are steadily at work on tho Grown. Tho Adeline Amalgamated recommences operations shortly.
