The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE. Equal and exact Justice to all men, Of whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political. THURSDAY, SEPT. 12, 1889.
Owing to unusual pressure on our space, our leading article and other matter are held over. It is expected that £1000 will be given in prizes alone at the Jubilee Regatta in Auckland. W. E- Bannister, clerk in the General Post Office, has been committed for trial for embezzlement. The rink carnival at Cambridge, last evening, was a most pronounced success, the hall being crowded. The Maori lunatic from Whatawhata has been brought in by Constable Wild, and will be taken down to the Auckland Asylum to-day. It seems that Mr Gelling, late Hamilton Town Clerk, did not like the prospects of exile at Sunday Island. He has changed his plans and left Auckland on Tuesday, with his family, for the sunny clime of Rarotonga. A party of natives from Raglan arrived in Hamilton yesterday to convey the remains of the unfortunate young man, Terewhira, who succumbed at the Hospital to injuries received at the flaxmill, for interment amongst his own people according to native custom. There was a very interesting meeting at the Waikato Archidiaconal Conference, at Cambridge, on Tuesday. The Rev. Mr Garland, of the Wesleyan Church, was present, and gave an excellent address on Church Unity. We are compelled to hold over a full report of the proceedings. The New Zealand Head Quarters of the Salvation Army have issued a circular announcing that an important enlargement of the War Cry will be made on the 28th inst. The paper will be enlarged to eight pages containing 32 columns of Army news, and will have more numerous illustrations of improved quality. There was a good muster of the Hamilton Light Infantry on parade on Tuesday evening, under Capt. Reid and Lieut. Pearson. After drill the following promotions were made : —Privates F. Hammond and W. Hayes to be corporals, and Privates C. Cowley and K. Dent corporals. The question of licensing tobacconists is about to be brought under the notice of the Commissioner of Customs by Mr Hutchinson, who intends asking whether he purposes introducing legislation to impose a small license fee on retailers of tobacco, with a view of assisting the revenue and rognlating the trade equity claims. Through a misstatement made by one of the members at the Farmers' Club, at Cambridge, on Monday, the impression had got abroad that the Taotaoroa and Cambridge Road Boards met on Saturday. Such is not the case, as their day of meeting is the third Saturday in each moQth, and, consequently, they will not meet until the 21st inst. At an adjourned meeting of the Hamilton Domain Board, held on Tuesday evening, there were present Messrs Coates (in the chair), Tippen, Davey, Bell. Wood and Jones. It was decided to accept the offer of the Hamilton Borough Council of fc>3 Gd per chain for the fencing round the east commonage, and also to fence in lot 8, Hamilton West, Mr Le Quesne writes giving a denial to the statements contained in Mr A. O. Kelly's letter in last issue, and he offers to submit the matter to bo decided by two unbiassed persons and whichever is proved to have mado false assertions to forfeit t's to the Hospital. This is purely a personal matter, that need not be discussed in our columns, We have given each side his say and cannot accept any more correspondence on the subject, The poetical and prophetic hen of which we read lately, who laid an egg with a versified injunction to its owner to "Go to Gordon, etc.," embossed upon its shell, appears to have a relation in a Hamilton pou'trv yard. An egg laid by a hen belonging to Mr J. R. E. Hatrick is at present on view in Mr Pannell's window. The egg is somewhat of a curiosity, and has what at first sight might readily be mistaken for raised letters upon the shell.
As showing the desire for retrenchment in local bodies in the district, wo would draw the attention of the ratepayers interested to the small amounts of the accounts passed at the meetings of the Waipa County Council aud the Hamilton Borough Council on Tuesday. The expenditure in the latter case has never been so low for one month, and on the strength of it some small works are to be undertaken which are absolutely necessary and which will provide work for the ratepayers.
A meeting of the milk suppliers to the Cambridge Cheese Factory is advertised to be held on Saturday, the 14th inst. at 3 p.m., to consider the advisability of carrying on the factory for another season. The Cambridge Factory cheese has now made a name for itself, and we sincerely trust, that the suppliers will not adopt a short-sighted policy, which virtually means the closing of the establishment. If once closed we doubt if it will ever bo opened again, aud this will mean the loan of hundreds of pounds of ready money to the farmers of the neighbourhood.
A very interesting table has been compiled by the New Zealand Shipping Company (Ld.), showing thu total amount of cargoes taken by the ships of tho various lines trading with this colony from New Zealand to Jiurope, during the wool and grain season* from Ist July, 1888, to 30th June, 188!). The name of each vessel and tlio ports of shipment aco given, together With U'cights of tho meat and number of bales of wool, flax, wheat, tailow, &c. Thirty-seven steamer?, of 98,005 tons, and 120 sailing vessel of »n aggregate tonnage of 115.VJ5, left New Zealand ports during the year, and took exports amounting to 1 o">s 301 carcase* of mutton, wuighing 00,1123,0081b5., 43,,-52/; quarters of beef, weighing 7.512,fiW1bs 377,43 a bales of wool and skins, 42,118 bales .of flax, 47.),110 sacks of wheat, 23.152 packages of tallow, and 17,85!U tons of sundries. Th)s is, certainly, a very good record for 3. young country.
The curiosity of calves is well known, but it not often that it will load them to commit suicide. Such, however, was the case a short time hack with four of Mr Karl's calves. They found out a quantity of tea lead, and experimented on it as an article of diet, tlieir expei iuient terminating fatally. The symptoms before death are somewhat peculiar, the animals seemingly bccomo blind, mid rush round in circles, gradually .educed in .-izw until the victims fall dead. In one case a post mortem examination was made, and about a teacup full of lead was found in the stomach.
Nothing further has been heard of the missing man, James Linnet. His brother, at Waiorongomai, has written to Cambridge, stating that he has not heard anything of him, and is at a. loss to account for his disappearance. It appears the missing man had a considerable sum of money upon him, and ho had just been paid a month's wages, stated to be about £10, and the day before he was paid he changed a £5 note, the only money found in his box was a penny, a halfpenny, and a farthing, so it is presumed he carried most of his money about with him. If his body is in the Waikato it will probably be found in the course of a day or so, as it is considerably over a week since ha was first missed. A rumour has been circulated in Cambridge to the effect that ho was robbed and thrown into the river by a tramp that was hanging about the town at the time of Linnet's disappearance. We, however, have made careful enquiry and cannot find the slightest foundation for the rumour.
