Great changes have taken place since then, and I think the Council should take some action in the matter re assembling the whole of the old settlers of that year, for they are rapidly disappearing from the scone. Only ill health prevented nie, I should have moved in tho matter ere this. I would suggest a committee comprising the Mayor, Crs. Finance Retort.—'The following report was received from the Finance Committee : —Your committee have the following repoit to make in reference to the deposit of the £4000 balance of the £(>OOO loan. Your committee found that it was impossible to give the requisite six months' notice to the debenture holders before the August payment of interest became duo. Your committee saw Mr Hume, of the 8.N.Z., ami found that the Bank were only giving 4 per cent, for deposits of six months, and 5 per cent, for twelve months. As a deposit of six months would entail a loss of £10 as between the two rates, your committee thought it more advisable to place the money on deposit for twelve months at 5 per cent. This action of your committee will not interfere with the Council giving the six months' notice to the debenture holders before Ist February next, should they think fit to do so, and in the meantime the money is fetching an extra 1 per cent. —Isaac Coates, Chairman.—The report was received and adopted, and the Clerk instructed to give the necesiary notice to the debentureholders in January.
