The motion was agreed to on a division by 23 to 0. The Bill was then read a second time. Sir ]<\ Whitaker moved the second reading of the Native Land Purchase Act Amendment Bill, but on tho motion of Mr Wnhawaha, it was adjourned till Tuesday. The Council rose at 4.12 p.m. till' Tuesday. HOUSE OF KSPKESENTATIVJ3S. Fit! DAY. The House met at 2.30. Mr Hislop moved the adjournment of the House in order to make a statement as to his connection with the Ward-Christie case. He denied that he had interfered with tho interest of justice in the matter, explaining that all ho had done was at the suggestion of a deputation awaiting on him at Oamaru. With regard to the statement that there had been a mistake in tho evidence, he denied that he had instructed the Crown Prosecutor at Dunedin to contest the validity of the warrant of committal which was to send Christie to gaol at Dunedin, or that ho used threats to the clerk of the court at Oamaru to induce him to refrain from carrying out the instructions of tho judge in the matter of altering the warrant A lengthy dismission followed, in which Messrs iiillanee, Liniach, Fish, Fitzherbert, J-lutchesou and Seddon urged tho appointment of a Committee of Inquiry. Mr Fuliou thought the House, not a committee, should deal with the matter.

The discussion wax interrupted by tho .->.3Q adjournment. The House resumed at 7.30. Sir 11. A. Atkinson moved that the House, at its rising, adjourn till Monday at 7.30 for Government business only. Mr Lirnach moved as an amendment that the sitting be for the purpose of considering the appointment of "a Select Committee to investigate the Ward-Hislop case. Sir H. A. Atkinson said he had made an olfer to the leader of tha Opposition to set apaita day for this purpose, sinj hi: luuked on the amendment as distinctly traversing tho policy of the Government, and should treat it as a want of confidence in the Government, and would not transact any business till this is dispo.v d of.
