WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
TIIU u-.ual monthly meeting of the Waikato County Council was held m the Chambers, Hamilton East, at 2.30 l>.m. yesterday. There were present : Ors. Primrose (chairman), Seddon, Larugh, Steele, Forrest, Kallender and Johnson. Mr T. G. Saudes, county engineer, was alto in attendance. The minutes of last meeting were confirmed and the outward correspondence read and adopted. Whaingamakino Buidgk.—-A letter was received from the Survey Office stating that the Whaingamarino bridge would, as soon as the amounts tho various local bodies interested should contribute were given, tie vested in the Waikato County Council. The Survey Office suggested that tho apportionment of the cust of maintenance of tho bridge be, Waikato County Council, <i 0 per cent ; Mercer Road Board, 10 per cent • Maungatawhin Road board, J.U per cent.; Pokeno Road Board, 10 percent. ; Paparata Road Board, 5 per cent., 1 ukekoheßoad Board, 5 per cent. The Clerk replied, suggesting that the apportionment for the two first bodies would be more just at 50 per cent, and 20 per cent, respectively. Hospital Biix.-A letter was received from tho Premier, acknowledging the receipt of the letter from the Council, ro tho Hospital Bill, and stating that the matter has been referred to the Colonial Secretary. , , Audit Fee.—Another demand was received from the Audit Office for the audit fees charged in December last. The matter was deferred. A similar letter was received troiu the Piako County Council as that published in our last report ot the Waipa County Council. Public Wohks Deuaiitm i,n r hi u Alivk.—A letter was received from tlie Treasury, stating that the demand from the county for half the cost of painting the Whangamarino Bridge had been leferred to the above department. RivKit Road.—'The Engineer was instructed to report at next meeting with reference to a petition from the sett ers ro the river road between Churchill and Mere me re. T , RANGiitnu Disthict. — Cr. Johnson stated a great deal of damage had been done in the district by the late floods but he had had it all repaired by the surfaceman. with the exception of one near 1< riar and Davie.s store at Huntly, which he had cleaned out and left for the engineer to inspect, as he considered it required larger pipes.—The Engineer was instructed to see
to this matter. Thndkhs.—'The following tenders were received for works in the Rangirin district. Contract No. 34, bridge culvert over Matahura creek. There were two tenders received, but it was decided not to accept either of the tenders as they were considered too high by the engineer, who was instructed to_ call tor fresh tender::. Contract No. 30, work at Proctor's swampG. and •). R- Jll| l, fascines, £1 9s per 100 ; culverts, .Wench; earth carting, 8d and 4d per yard. K. Storey, fascines, £1 Ss (id per 100; C'.ilyeits, £1 5s each ; earth carting, 8d and 2: f d.— The tender of 11. Storey was accepted. Freights.—'The Chairman said that there could be no doubt among members that they were suffering seriously from ttie rates charged ou the railway. Since the commissioners had cine into otnee some slight concessions had been made, but they amounted to really very little, about (id per ton for wheat, or £1 for 100 acres of grain grown In Amorica lOOlbs of wheat was carried 1200 miles for (id, while the freight from Hamilton to Auckland, 84 miles, was about 4d per lOOlbs. There was 110 doubt that the prohibitive rates were gradually crushing the farmers out of the country.—Or. Dorrest said he thought that by lowering the freights the price .if produce would be lowered in proportion. The best thing to do, in his mind, was to interview the Commissioners, who he understood would visit the Waikato after the sefsion.—The Clerk was instructed to communicate with the various local bodies, requesting them to collect information 011 this subject, for presentation to the Commissioners on their visit to the district. . Payments.— I The following accounts were passed for payment:—Clark, £2 12s fld ; interest, £41 Is «Jd ; Maunder, W2s.M; Thk Waikato Times. ISs ; 1). Lees, £1, los; L O'Neill, £3 4s 4d ; Johnson, £110s ; l'orrest, 10s ; Kallendar, 10s ; salary, 12s 3d; Dixon, £2 13s ; Reid, lis Td ; W Buss, £4 17s ; Patterson and Co., £110s ;I. HacUett, 10s; C. Vincent, £3; Lars Hansen, £1; Townsend, £1 Is ; Engineer, £4 4s. This concluded the business, and the Board rose.
