DEATH OF JUDGE GILLIES.

(BY TELEGUAI'JI. —PKESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland. Friday. Judge Gillies was not very well when lie went to bod last night, and asked to be called at 8 o'clock this morning. When the housekeeper opened the door he was lying on tho bed with blood oozing from h's mouth. The doctor was sent for, but lie died three hours later. He was sitting in the Compensation Court yesterday. Wellington, l'riday. The Supreme Court adjourned at the afternoon sitting, as a mark of respect to he late Judge Gillies.

Yesterday forenoon he sat as President in the GWt of Compensation, with Messrs Barstow and Carr as assessors, and in the afternoon he paid a visit to the property in question situated at Orakei. lie was unwell yesterday, and when he retired to rest last n'iprht he told his housekeeper to call him about 8 o'clock this morning. When she called him there was no reply, and upon opening the door of the bedroom, Judge Gillies was discovered lying on his bed in an insensible condition, with blood about his mouth. Dr. lloneyman was sent for, and arrived about 9 o clock. He immediately recognised the serious naturo of the seizure, and on his suggestions Drs. Mackellar and I>" n d wero summoned by telephone. Both were promptly in attendance, .b rom the first little hopes were entertained of recovery, still all that skill could do was tried by tho three medical gentlemen in attendance, but of no avail, and Judge Gillies passed away at about 11.30 o clock. Mr Barstow, who sat, with Judge Gillies in the Compensation Court yesterday, says the deceased appeared to be in excellent health, and that he declined an invitation to c ine with Mr Barstow on the ground that ho had a great many papers to look through. When the news became known in the city all the legal otlicps were closed, and the flag at tho municipal buildings was hoisted haltmast. ________
