THE THAMES TOWN CLERK.
111 V TELEUUAPH.—FBKSS A.SSOUIATIO.N'. ] Thames, Monday. The Police Court was crowded t<» day to hear tho charge of embezzlement against F. C. Dean, late Town Cleric, called on. The accused was formally called but did not appear. Tho Crown Prosecutor said he was fully aware Dean would not appear to day, as from information received on Saturday, ho knew accused had left the district under cover of darkness last Thursday night in a fishing boat and made his escape out of the gulf. This was the way he appeared to have treated the borough which had been such a, beuetit to him so long. His' escape, however, was perhaps a matter for congratulation for the country at large, and the Thames in particular, though an opportunity had thus been lost of publicly showing the burgesses to what a large extent they had been defrauded. As a result of the audit so far made by Mr Melntyre, it has been discovered that moneys of I he ratepayers considerably exceeding £1000 had been fraudently misappropriated by Dean. On Mr Williamson's application the bail bonds were estreated and a fresh warrant issued. The police believe that Dean escaped to Norfolk Island by the schooner Christina.
