FROZEN MEAT TRADE.

TO THK EDTTOB. Sill, —The subjoined memo of a consignment of 250 wethers and 180 lambs, frozen in Auckland and sent to London by the Tainui in January last, may be of interest to some of ovr Waikato farmers, and is worthy the attention of our newly-formed Farmers' Club. It proves conclusively that unless a very much better price can be realised in the English market, or a very considerable reduction be made in the present high charges amounting to 074 per cent, of the cross proceeds, exporting meat to England from the Waikato cannot be considered a paying speculation, and is not likely to assume any very extensive proportions. Another interesting feature about the statement is that whilst the producer and shipper, who have run all the risk, have in this case had to sustain a very serious loss over the consignment, the middleman who accepts no risk has been enabled to pay a 10 per cent, dividend. This transaction lias convinced mc that it is not to our interests to place valuable consignments of this nature in tho hands of irresponsible agents over which, at such a distance from home, we can have no control ; and'not until there are those who will come and buy our meat from us oil the farm at a given price can we expect to reap any benefit from tho frozen meat trade. There is no doubt but that those who have the selling of the meat in the English market must have a direct interest in the salo of it, if it is to bo made pay. Subjoined is the statement I have referred to.—l am, &c., llknuy Buttle. Annandalc, June 28th, 1880.
