MR CHAPMAN EWEN'S WIRE STRAINER.
We had an opportunity yasterday of seeing the application of one of Mr Chapman Ewen's self-locking wire strainer, for which he has lately obtained a patent. It is both simple and effective. The roller is of cast iron, similar in this respect and also in size, to Walker's patent roller, but the outside rim, instead of being circular like other rollers is triangular. The points which press against tho post on thelower side are slightly rounded off, and half of the side of each triangle is the segment of a circle. This is the material point, as it enables the roller to be easily turned with the handle. There is a square hole through the centre in which the handles, one on each side, are applied to put on the strain. When a sufficient tension has been obtained the roller is eased back, and presents a fiat surface, the upper portion of a side of the triangle. This bears against the post and proves an efficient stop, and no further fastening whatever is required.
