Svd.n'ey, June 20. The Government has decided to renew the San Francisco mail contract for a year, subject to the approval of Parliament. The agreement provides for the exclusion of Chinese crews from mail steamers. Major-General Edwards left Houwkong for Australia to make a periodical inspection of the Australian local forces aud defences. Brisbane, June 20. News has been received of the murder of Davelle, a copra dealer, by natives of Solomon Group. A native at Sauto was also hacked to pieces for practising witchcraft. Perth, June 20. A rich discovery of tiu has been made in the Blackwood River district. Melbourne, June 21. The new procedure rules were passed by the House last nii;ht with slight amendments. The rule for enforcement of the cloture was abandoned. Donald Wallace, the well-known sportsman, was elected to represent the Southwestern province in the Legislative Council, vacant by the death of the late Mr Francis Ormond. In the House last night the Premier stated that the Government had no information from the Imperial authorities respecting the suggestion that English troops should bo stationed in Victoria. He added that he believed the colony would be opposed to such a proposal.
Boyle is arranging for an Australian cricketing team to visit England next year. Murdoch will probably captain the team. Mauritius ports are declared infected, on account of smallpox. Bkjsjjane, June 21. The House last night passed the Bill providing for payment of members. A boat containing the captain and wife, stewardess and nine sailors of the barque Brazon, arrived at Woody Island yesterday, after being nine days at sea. The Brazon was wrecked on a coral reef five hundred miles north-east of Sandy Cape. Another boat with the mate and five of the crew is still missing.
