KAIWARA MURDER.
|UV TELEGUAI'H. —I'KKSS ASSOCIATION. I Wellington, Friday. Louis Chemis was again before the Court, charged with the murder of Thomas Hawkins.
Edwin Henry Bradford, Government armourer, deposed ho had examined the gun produced, and found a trace of soot in one barrel, but not in the other. Both barrels were dirty, thought tho weapon had been recently ■ discharges!, • but believed both barrels had not been fired off on the same day, as when ho put his finger iu the second barrel it came out clean.
Cross-examined : If two shots were fired he thought they must have been from the same barrel; it would tako about a minute to reload.
George Lee said accused rode with him as far as his (accused's) gato on May 31st at about 5 o'clock. Witness also deposed that at 5.30 on the morning following the murder he saw a man running up the Nghauranga line, but it was too dark to identify anyone.
John Holmes, a tanner, was cross-ex-amined as to whether Hawkins was not continually at law with his neighbours. Witness denied any personal knowledge of disputes, though Hawkins, he knew, had driven sportsmen off his land. Was not aware that Hawkins frequently quarrelled with his neighbours. Wm. Skey, Government analyst, had examined the stilletto and sheath, also clothes taken from prisoner's house, but found no traces of blood.
John Tasker, the clerk in Civil Service, produced several packets of newspapers and scraps of paper which had been handed him by the police, and gave evidence as to fitting the various parts together. He deposed that he had seen the word " Kaitangata " among the pieces and on looking up the files of the paper he found that the piece wasfiomaPost of 3tst May, the date of the murder. A Post of the 31st May last was found among the papers taken from prisoner, but it was quite whole. Inspector Thomson, recalled, deposed that he recognised the envelope marked "F" in the box marked " F," the contents were found in the bedroom of Louis Chemis on Ist June. He took the papers from another envelope and placed them in the envelope now before the Court. This coucluded the case for tho prosecution. ___^_________
