The debate on the Address-iu-Keply in the Lower House last night appears to have been animated, but brief. The

debate was brought to a close, and the motion by Mr Harkness, the new member for Nelson, was carried without a division. It is a very rare, if not an unprecedented, occurrence to have so speedy a termination to the debate on the Address - inRcply, whioh is generally the signal for the display of much party feeling, recriminations and protracted harangues. Wo shall now receive the Financial Statement-on Tuesday, according to the promise made by the Premier, and if the Public Works Statement is delivered within a reasonable time, we may expect a short, and, probably, a session worthy of being recorded as a useful one. Since the expenditure on large important works has practically ceased, there is no longer the interest or importance attached to the Public Works Statement; therefore, there is no reason for delaying it.
