Ohaupo v. Hamilton.
The first match of the season between those two teams was played in one of Mr Mears' paddocks, at Oliaupo, on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a win for Hamilton by seven points to nil. The ground was, to say the least about it, rough, and the Hamilton men were placed at a great disadvantage from this causa, dribbling being very difficult. The weather was splendid, being neither too hot nor too cold, and the rain during the early part of the week had not made the ground too soft. As Huntly is not going to have a team this year Ohaupo was strengthened among the forwards by J. Harris, who did good work. There was a good deal of delay before the prame started, Oliaupo havingsome difficulty in getting a team, and the Hamilton men after stripping, were kept waiting some time. The game was not very fast, ami was kept chiefly among the forwards, and although the now rules were not very well known by all the players, there was very little wfthesquabblingwhich formerly constituted a good deal of the football in Waikato, Messrs Crookes and McFarlane umpired for Oliaupo and Hamilton respectively ; and Mr Light acted as referee, and all gave the utmost satisfaction. The spells wore of 30 minutes each, 5 minutes being allowed in the last one on account of time wasted by one of the Oliaupo men in playing the bail after the whistle had gone. The following were the teams: —Ohat-ipo, Marshall (captain), Morgan, Cowley (2), Goble (2), Kusabs(2), Norrish, Summons (2), Williams, Hogan, Walsh, and Harris. Hamilton : -Fullback, Hume ; three-quarters, Sage, Fisher, and Gaudin; half-backs, von Stunner, unci Tide) ; forwards, Wright, Peacock, Qiinn, Quick, Gwynne (captain). Jolly, Gribble, Mayes, and MclCenzie. Oliaupo won the toss, and elected to defend the e isti rn goal, Gwynne kicking off for Hamilton, with the sun at their backs. During the first spell the play was very even, the ball Doing kept about the middle of the lield, but it was plainly seen that the Hamilton team were having the best of it. The game was mostly confined to the forward", the backs having very little to do. Several chances of scoring were mulled by the Hamilton forwards through their hard kicking. A. Kusalis and Goble made short dodgy runs lor Oliaupo, while the punting and running of Fisher, von Stunner and Gaudin did Pood service for Hamilton. For Oliaupo, Hogan and Williams did good work among the forwards, while Qitinn, Quick, MclCenzie and Gribble were prominent for Hamilton. This spell ended without a score on either side. Morgan opened the sec >nd spell bv kicking olf for Ohaupo, and as the play became loose, the superiority of the Hamilton forwaids soon made itself apparent. By- the splendid rushes of Jolly, Quick, Quinn, Hume and McKenzie, the ball was soon brought into Ohaupo's 20, when by some foul play on the Ohaupo side, Hamilton was awarded a free kick. Fisher took the kick, and landed a very neat goal. Soon afterwards, Gribble, by good following up, rushed over the line, ami secured a try. The kiek was given to Fisher, but no goal resulted. After this the ball was kept in Ohaupo's 2o for a considerable time, when from a serum von Stunner passed the ball to Fisher who potted a splendid goal. From the kick out the ball hung about half-way until time was called. Thus the game ended, Hamilton being victorious by 7 points to nil. For Hamilton, Gribble, Quinn, Mayes, Jolly, and MeKen/.ic played the best among the forwards. Fisher, whose kicking was very good, Hume, Gaudin and von Stunner being conspicuous among the backs. Harris, Hogan, Morgan, Williams and Semmens (2), did good work among the Ohaupn forwards, while A. Knsabs, Goble and Marshall did most of the woik behind.
