BURGLARY AT HAMILTON.
On* Saturday night, at about 11.45 p.m., Sergeant McGrath arrested a man named George Walter Willotighby at the back of the Hamilton Borough Council Chambers. The circumstances which led to the arrest are these: At about 11.15 p.m. the Sergeant, on approaching Mr A. Scott's store, saw a man, whom he afterwards recognised as Willoughby, run from the doorway and cross over the road into the shade by the Council Chambers, where the Sergeant lost sight of him. Shortly after this he saw n litrht in the Chambers, and going over and looking through the window lie saw Willoughbv over-hauling the papers in the ollice. Callina a boy named Mor ri--, who was near, the Serge nit posted him at the back, telling him to let him know if the man attempted to e-cape through tho back windoivs, while he tried if the front doors were open. While the Sergeant was doing this Willoughby got out by the back, and the boy informing the Sergeant of this he ran round and caught tiiin just as lie was making towards the river. The prisoner came round quietlv on to the street, then made an effort to escape, but, after a short struggle, the Sergeant got the handcuffs on and took him safely to the lock-up. The prisoner was brought up yesterday afternoon before Isaac Coates, Esq., J. P., and remanded.
