TE AWAMUTU.
Waikato Hospital.—The Star reveals to this district the sad fact that the new building, although erected six months .ago, is not yet available for patients. Will the management consider whether they had not better hold another ball on the premises, or else utilise the building as a storehouse for grain, so that there may be some advantage accruing from the outlay attendant on the erection. Perhaps a series of "tea rights" would be acceptable. That Praiseworthy Act.—The secretary (so says your issue of the Gth hist.) reported the receipt of £11 13s lid as a voluntary contribution from the men on the Waiteti contract. Now, is it not a fact that the so-called voluntary contribution is nothing of the kind, but merely the amount retained by the manager from each man's wages as a sort of accident fund, so that in the event of a casualty occurring, the injured man may be provided for, whilst in the Hospital. Should this hypothesis be incorrect no doubt it will be promptly refuted. That Cottage.—lt is now sirteen days since the Te Awnnmtu Public Library has been in transit. From whore it originally stood to its new site is just 350 yards, nnd the last spell was completed yesterday ; so people must not complain of any want of expedition. There will be a nice little bill to pay for its removal.
Thade. —Matters mercantile hereabouts are very different to what they were in the bad old days, when one storekeeper reigned supreme in the place, and was so independent of custom that he actually never took tho trouble to exhibit his wares. Now, what with cheap cash stores and occasional visits from Auckland drapery firms, the public are beginning to experience that money goes twice as far as formerly. Thk Weatheh.—There is one advantage about this continuous bad weather. It is not misleading, Jike its boss, Commander Edwin. Those interested in the success of the fancy dress ball, did well to postpone the event, as the roads are becoming decidedly unpleasant.
