Auckland, Wednesday. A FUItTHKIt advance of 40s per ton in the Colonial Sugar Refining Company's i\ T o. 1 and 2, and 30s on No. 3 was made to-day. This is the fifth advance in this commodity since April 7th, the total rise in nine weeks being £"> 10s per ton.
At the Supreme Court this afternoon, when dealing with the case of W. H. Carter, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of maliciously shooting a calf, not his own property, .Justice (iillies referred to the fact that the accused had shot the animal thinking ho was justified in so doing, as it was trespassing on his property. This, His Honour said, was no excuse. No one was justified in destroying domestic animals. Under an old Provincial Act this did not, however, refer to dogs, goats or fowls, when found trespassing. His Honour admitted Carter to probation.
