(t\Y telegraph.—own correspondent.) Auckland, Wednesday. Ciiahi.es Wilkinson, alias Robinson, was sentenced to three years on four charges of stealing, including books from the Freo Library. John Rita, a Maori was charged with stealing a horse, the property of Mrs lfeauy, at Lichfield. After hearing the evidence the jury gave a verdict of not guilty, and the prisoner was discharged. Fredrick C.iwley, alias James Clarke, alias Fredrick Taylor, pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent assault upon one Charlotte Smith. This is a case in which the accused advertised for a companion to a lady in the country, and induced the girl to accompany him by the lliverhead steamer, on the protniioc lie was taking her to the situation. Piisoner acknowledged the material points of the prosejul rix's depositions, and wished to express deep sorrow for his actions. His counsel urged that the deed was the result of a weak mind. His Honour said that in this case there was very much doubt if it was not one of attempted rape, lie was satisfied of tho deliberation of the act. It must be met with severe punishment for protection of the public, and he must inflict a punishment as could put a stop to such offences. He sentenced him to three years' penal servitude, and to receive one whipping of twenty lashes with the cat within one month.
