INTERPROVINCIAL.
(f.Y TELEGRAPH. —I'RESS ASSOCIATION.) GHRI'STCHURCM, Friday. Tin l ; well-known firm ol Messrs Lightbaud, Allan and Co., boot importers, have suspended payment, and go into lillii id At ion. The local creditors, outside the Bank of New Z. aland, are Small, but a considerable amount, is owing by the linn in London. Since IST- they have heen engaged in large transactions in the leather and grindery trade. 7'he books of the establishment are not yet closed, tint this is only left until the work at present in hand is finished. Tho total liabilities of the linn are stated to be ii 1*20,000, anil the stoppage of work is most unfortunate, as about 320 hands will be suddenly thrown out of employment and the local markets for hides seriously affected. The assets are estimated at ii 130.000, showing a surplus of £10,000. The failure is due to extended ramification which has proved unsuccessful. There is a probability of the factory being resumed shortly on a more condensed basis.
A proposal from tho Hawke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Association re licensing sialiioiu, was discussed at the Agricultural and Pastoral meeting today, but considered premature.
