DESTRUCTIVE GALE AT TE AROHA.
Since Friday a very strong gale has been blowing at Te Aroha, and between Saturday night and Sunday morning it was at its fullest fury, as could be seen by results on Sunday. Numerous fences in the lower part of the township were found blown down, and several outbuildings were lifted from their foundations and carriod distances away. The greatest destruction, however, was at the old Te Aroha battery, which is now a complete wreck. This battery was built about eight years ago, and did some good service in its time. About six months ago it was stripped of all its machinery, Mr Kersey Cooper having bought and removed it to Waitekauri. Having been in disuse for some time the building was in a somewhat shaky and delapidiited condition, but no one anticipated that it was to ba blown away in a single night, yet such is the case. Part of the iron roof and sides have been blown chains away, whilst the remaining part of the collapsed building are, with the remains of the roof, as before stated, a perfect wreck. The scene on Sunday was one of wild desolation.
