RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL
TO THK KD1TOI!. Sin,—ln your issue of tho Dili, there appears a letter .signed "Observer," taking tlio chairman '.■.nil councillors to task ro curium works proposed to be carried out by them, and inferring that the said works were unnecessary. With regard to the W'ainui .Stream tiiere is not a "splendid level stony ford,'' sis stated by " Observer." It is true-' that the centre of the ford is stony, but the banks and approaches are so soft that it is almost impossible to take n cart or sledge over without damage to the goods upon them. The fact is at times you have to unload and carry your goods across the apology for a foot bridge, which is almost as dangerous as the ford. This ford is not siluate'-l on the surveyed road, and is liable to be closed up at any time. '• Observer's " letter would lead ratepayers in other parts of the country to believe that the proposed bridge over the stream would be solely to the chairman's benefit. This is not so, as there are a number of other settlers in this district, and it in situated upon ■what will eventually become the main road to Ruapuke-Kawhia, The proposed bridge over the Upuatia stream is also a necessary work, but I am afraid it will be some time before the Council will sec- their way clear ha its erection in the present state of their finances. There is n.i ferry over this stream, as the ferry boat is lost, and for the last month we have bad no means of communication with Uaglari. This shows that it is about time the Council took some steps to provide, the Kaiioi settlers with either a proper ferry or a bridge. If "Observer" had to wait upon the bank for hours for a chance boat or canoe to cross to Raglan, the same- as the unfortunate settlers of Kaiioi have to do, I am certain he would not be so ready to impute jobbery to our worthy chaiiinan and councillors. I fee! certain that- our present Council is composed of gentlemen ivnn will not readily lend themselves to such work, and our chairman is one who would lie likely to give the prufeience (o woik in any other part of the county il it weie more necessary than upon the road leading to his own residence.-—I am, i.'tc, Fkaxk IS. Skwki.i,, County Engineer.
