Mr Gladstone and Mr Morley severely condemned the absence of Lord Lytton from the opening of the Paris Exhibition. Lord JDufferin has received the freedom of the city of London. Three hundred police and military are engaged evicting tenants from Lord Landowne's estate in Ireland. The Russian cruiser Majostnik is supposed to be lost with all hands. Serious defects have been found in the 200-ton guns made at Woolwich. Henry Vizettelly, of the firm of Vizettelly and Co., publishers in the Strand, has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment for selling copies of Zola's works, although the books were revised since November last, when the firm was fined .£IOO for publishing obscene literature. The Court, at the same time besides lining the firm, ordered Zola's works generally to be suppressed. During the inquest on. the remains of James Maybrook, who is alleged to have been murdered by his wife, a hitter, written by the accused to a gentleman in Liverpool, showed that improper relations existed between .Mrs Maybrook and the gentleman indicated. The inquest has been adjourned for further evidence.
