Hamilton East School v. Hamilton West School.

A match between teams from the above schools was played last Saturday, on Sydney Square, Hamilton. Several of the boys came late, thereby delaying the start. This should not occur again, as it delays the practice of the men's club. The game was played under the old Rugby rules, and was divided into spells of thirty minutes. In the first spell the play was pretty even, the ball travelling from ftne end of the field to the other. From tho beginuing itwas'pretty evident thatCossar, the captain of tho West, could run past the East boys, with two exceptions— * rank Cowper and George Gillett. One or other of these two really good players was continually grassing Cossar, as he was always running, making some good runs, but was not sufficiently backed up. Ho fended vory well, but used his hands a little more than is considered correct. Towards the end of the spell, from a line out near the West goal, Frank Cowper got the ball, made a dodgy run, and got in behind the gaol. The kick was taken by Fred Cowper and resulted in a splendid goal. For the West, Cossar, Harris, -Vnsell, Dovery, C. Hume, and G. Edgecumbo did well ; whilst for the East, Geo. Uillott, Frank Cowper, Geoff Gel ing, Charlie Smith, Lionel Kingsley and Dick Gillett. Tho latter especially deserves credit. After a short interval the game wis continued, the Kast jubilant, whilst the West determined to score. During the first ten minutes the West wore nearly scoring, J. Harris bringing the ball through frequently. After this the East worked together bettor, the play all through being ve7y oven, tho same boys on Bach side, whoso names we have already mentioned, doing most of the work. The second spell ended without any mire, the K;\st school thus winning by a goal, (throe points). It w;is somewhat noticeable that tho biggest boys on each side were not tho. biggest workers. Mr J. darken acted as mnpiio and referee, his post was an easy ami pleasant one. the boys playing without wrangling and very little talking. The return match will be phiyc.d under tho new rules.
