RAGLAN.
Social Gathering.— A social meeting of welcome to the Rev. Mr Elliott took place ill the Raglan Public Hall 011 Tuesday evening, the 14th .May, and was well attended l>y friends from all parts of the district In the unavoidable absence of Mr Wallis, INCr Pegler occupied the chair, and after briefly speaking of the object of the meeting, the following programme was cone through : —" Hymn of Fisherman's Children," choir; song, "Vicar of Bray," Mr Rendell ; recitation, "Fat in the l'ndding," Mr E. 0. Wallis; duet, "List to the Convent liells," the Misses Wallis and Ilendell ; reading, " Illiterate Schoolmaster," Mr Rendell ; hymn, "The New Name,"' Sunday-school children, who also sung " Follow Jesns"; soncr, "Jessie's Dream," Mrs Sewell ; reading, " How We Hunt a Mouse," Mr Henry. An interval of a quarter of an hour hero took place for a social intercourse. Mr Elliott opened the second pari of the evening's entertainment with a very spirited and eloquent address, stating that he was very favourably impressed with the distiict and its surrounding. After an earnest appeal to those present to attend Church each Sibbath day, he thanked them for the sincere welcome they had given him. Coffee and refreshments were handed round and wereinost acceptable to all present, after which the rest of theevening'.s entertainment wont on as follows : — Dialogue, " The Lady I Love;" by Messrs Burton, Wallace, Henry, and Ornr.ston ; duet, " Minute Gun at Sea," M essrs ( h miston and Uendell; recitation. "Ask .Mamma," Mr lSurton ; soil", "The Englishman," Mr Ilendell;; recitation. " Friendship," Mr Elliott; song, " Eileen Allanah," Mr C. Moon ; reading, " His siHpender.V Mr Henry. Mr Calvert, in a maiden speech, and in appropriate terms, proposed a vote of thanks to the ladies. Vulva of thanks were also given to Mr Ilendell for the use of his American organ, to the committee for their success in getting up the meetinc, and loth"chairman. Mr I'egler, in reply, thanked them for their expression of good will, and trusted they would, ilniing the winter months, start a .Mutual Improvement S.n-iety, ami at interval-, perhnp-., give two or three entertamments ~f a similar character. The. National Ant!,em b.ivii.pr b-en sung, the pleasant evening's entertainment. closed. Mrs Matlna:, and the Misres Wallis ami Mitchell kindly presided at the organ, and the efforts of all the ladies ; \n;l gentlemen who took part ww>! a very high character, and each received trie applause that was due.
