RAGLAN
Ministerial Changes. — The Rev. Mr Stephenson, Wesleyan minister here for the last five years, recently left us for the scene of his new labours at Coromandel and carried with him the best wishes of his numerous friends. His successor, Mr Elliot, is expected in the course of a week or two. Character Delineations.—The great professor of phrenology, Lio Medo, has come and gone. Whilst here he gave several lectures, both in the Public Hall, Raglan, and also at Te Mata. A considerable number of persons resident here had their heads examined and then characters told. Many good hits were made, whilst in other cases the Professor was a little out in his calculations. Ascent of Karioi.— During the last few weeks the ascent of this mountain has been very popular with our numerous visitors. Professor Thomas whilst here has ascended, while many others have climbed to its summit. Professor Thomas started somewhat late in the day, and did not reach the top until well on in the afternoon. The view was grand in the extreme, Taupo on the south, Te Aroha on the East and Waikato's vast plain, northward the coast of Raglan and behind the Manukau Heads, with the land and mountains inland. Professor Thomas expressed himself as much pleased with the district around Raglan, and made some excursions in search of geological specimens. Licensing Committee.--At the meeting of the new Licensing Committee held here Mr Rendell was elected chairman. Road Works.—Tenders are called by the County Engineer for the construction of a bridge over the Wainui river, the payment of which comes out of the rates from Native lands. This has been a longdesired work, and will be of great use to both Native and Europeans occupying adjacent lands, as the ford at present in use is all but impassable in winter time. The Karioi Road Board are also going to execute a very necessary piece of work, viz., the clearing of the road from opposite the township through the Native land at Te Kopua to the above mentioned bridge over the Wainui river, which also will be paid out of Native rates. The contract of Messrs Vercoe and Sutton on the Waipa Road has been completed, is of a very substantial character, and a great improvement to the road. All contracts are being pushed forward on this road, and in other parts of the district. Visitors —We still have many vititors amongst us from Waikato and elsewhere. Mr Barugh and family left during last week, after staying some weeks. Wharf.— Pile-driving still goes on at the wharf, though staging will have to be added now, as the piles are driven out as far as low water mark. Mr Raistrick is superintending the driving of the piles on behalf of the Board. Volunteers.—The Raglan contingent, under Captain R. Bruce, intend joining the main body of volunteers in the camp at Hamilton this week.
