AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
(by electric telegraph,—copyright), Sydney, March 17. The premises of Gibbs, Shallard and Co., printers, were partially destroyed by fire last night. Heavy damage was sustained before the fire was extinguished. The insurances amount to £33,000. It is understood that the Government of New South Wales intend to ask the New Zealand Government if it is prepared to consent to the renewal of the San Francisco service for a year. The Daily Telegraph, in an article ou the subject, says the immediate prospects of trade with Canada do not justify Australia in subsidising an expensive steam service. The San Francisco route has been a continuous benefit to the eolonies, and the existing trade should be conserved and further developed. The time has not yet arrived for a fortnightly service. The Telegraph concludes by recommending the renewal of the San Francisco service for a year to enable full consideration to be given to the Canadian proposals.
