ALEXANDRA.
Lecture on India.—A most interesting and instructive, lecture on India was delivered here in the Public Hall on Thursday evening by Mr Griffiths, father of the llev. Mr Griffiths of this district. The lecturer, who is on a visit to his son, has but lately arrived from England. The fiist part of his address, descriptive of the voyage from England to Bombay, was exceedingly good and shewed tho lecturer had a good fund of humour and he was soon in " sypathetic accord " with his numerous audience. In the second part of the lecture Mr Griffiths fully described the dress, manners and characteristics of the various castes of natives in and about Bombay. An account of the massacres and nctrocitios committed by the natives at Cawnpore, Delhi and elsewhere was most graphically given and intensively followed by the audience, amidst subdued applause. Throughout it was a most interesting lecture, and should Mr Griffiths be induced to re-deliver it elsewhere all who can should attend, as they may be assured of a very satisfactory evening's instruction ami entertainment. The Rev. Mr Griffiths was in the chair, and the Misses Wills atid Finch kindly gave some of their excellent songs and duets at intervals during the lecture. Sympathy With Cambiuihie. — Great sympathy was felt hero at tho disaster our Cambridge friends havo suffered by tho Duke-street fire. It was something of a relief when The Waikato Times arrived here with an account of the catastrophe, to learn at least some few of the sufferers were insured, as somehow or other a general belief had gained ground that no insurance office would take a risk there, so to find that all were mistaken, was a matter of some congratulation, as things might have been worse.
